At the end of the day my parents wanted both boys to have a souvenir so we went into the gift shop and my mom took Lucas over to the stuffed animals to help him pick one out. Well, he didn't need help at all haha, He grabbed a T-Rex and a saber-tooth tiger and wouldn't let them go. The picture to the right is him in his car seat on the way home, still holding his souvenirs. =) |
I had such high hopes this January for really staying on top of blogging but life happens. My son needed a little extra attention this month as he is teething and due to that, our loving dog also needed some extra attention as she felt a little left out. So my time was spent in other ways this month but thats ok, that is just how life works =) Besides the teething, we had a really fun month! We watched the Bronco's win important games to make it to the superbowl, we visited the museum of natural history, we celebrated Jeremy's brother, Nathan's birthday, we went to high tea with my best friend Caitlin, and we spent a lot of time as a family to hanging out on snowy days. Lucas and I had a lovely day at high tea with my best friend. We both thought it was a great way for Lucas to learn how to be a gentleman at a young age. Ironically he spent a good amount of time flirting with two girls at the table next to us =P Another outing for the month was a trip to the Natural History Museum with my family. We assumed Lucas really wouldn't care about it much but we were surprised that he actually really enjoyed looking at everything. We could tell he was really taking everything in. One of the best parts about going to the museum was getting to see our nephew Tristan. It is so much fun to see the boys interact together! One of my favorite parts of hanging out with my family is getting to see my parents be grandparents and my brother be a dad to his son and an uncle to mine. We had a beautiful, crazy, snowy, January. Have I mentioned before how much I love our little life? I LOVE our little family, our little apartment, our little dog, our little simple crazy life....we are so blessed!

When I first heard people start talking about "clean" living I honestly thought they must be talking about living free from drugs and alcohol and when people talked about "toxins" I assumed that's the drugs and alcohol they need to be cleansed from...But when I started to see these terms pop up in my mommy-groups and church circles, I started to wonder (and honestly hope) that I was seriously wrong about their meanings! Let me back up a bit. Though I came from a wonderful Christian household and was raised by parents whose focus was to provide the best life possible for their children, I am coming to learn that some of the "healthy habits" I was accustomed to as a child, are not considered healthy anymore. I thought that healthy eating growing up was just eating at home. I think I got this from the fact that when my parents told us "we need to start eating healthier" we just ate more home dinners and less at restaurants and fast food places. With this logic a night of hot dogs and mac and cheese were healthy as long as we ate them at home.
Way back when my grandparents were kids, you ate whole, natural, farm grown foods because that's all that was available. There were no pesticides, processed foods, artificial flavorings, etc... And somewhere down the road someone decided that things should be easier...because we are a sophisticated race and we dont have time for being farmers! So lets not only artificially make everything, but lets make it easier, faster, and mass produced for more availability. I am sure some of this was fueled by previous famines, wars, and depressions; but it was also fueled by convenience, increased work hours, and women working outside of the home. And so up popped frozen foods, fast food, baby formula, etc...and by the time my parents had us these things were just a normal way of life. They weren't necessarily good or bad they were just easier and who chooses harder when its more expensive and there are no obvious problems with the easier option.
Here's where the clean and detoxified living comes in. This is what "Boulderites" (neighboring city of all natural residents) have been talking about. And this is something I am now very interested in, especially for the sake of my son. I do not believe that all diseases, cancers, etc can be prevented by eliminating toxins in our diet and environment, but anything I can do to help give myself and my family a better fighting chance, I am ready to do! This journey is slow, painful, shocking, and frustrating. But it is so worth it to me! Feel free to follow me on this journey by reading this blog as I talk about how I am slowly changing the way "the Longs" live =)
So back when facebook was doing a random facts craze (where people posted random facts and if you liked their status they gave you a number of random facts to post about yourself) I was given numbers by a couple of people but since I was on my phone I never got around to posting anything...so I am hoping this little challenge will make up for that. So we spent it with Jeremy's side of the family. We had a low key but fun night just hanging out, playing a couple games, and watching the ball drop. I guess you could call these our family New Year's resolutions but they are really more like our wishes and hopes for 2014:
